Description
This is an incomplete application for membership to the Children of the American Revolution, chapter District of Columbia, Washington. It appears to be a handwritten copy without signatures but with all of the information about the genealogy of the applicant back to the Revolutionary War. The applicant is "Joe" Russell Gross, age 14 who was born in Cairo, IL (County Alexander) on Jan. 31, 1904. He lists his lineage back to Sargeant William Pickett who was born in Farquier Co., VA on June 6, 1750 and who died in the same place on May 14, 1795. He lists his lineage through his mother, Annie Belle Little Gross who was the daughter of William Little whose wife Addie Grote Little-Brown was the daughter of John Sea Grote who was married to Sarah Jane Pickett Grote who was the daughter of Eli Pickett who was the son of William Pickett (born about 1755) who was the son of William Pickett (born 1725) who was married to Lucy young and "the ancestor who assisted in establishing American Independence while acting in the capacity of Sargeant with Capt. Anthony Singleton's Regiment." (Col. Charles Harrison) additional notes indicate that William Pickette enlisted Dec. 20, 1776 and was discharged on Dec. 20, 1779 and that his father, Capt. William Pickett served as Captain in first N. Carolina Regiment appointed Sept. 1, 1775. He also served as Major of Militia in Virgina 1776 to 1778.References are listed to support the above information.
There are additional notes about the family of William Pickett and the following paragraph,
The record copied from my great aunt's papers (Mrs. Joseph Russell) Isabell Grote Russell, Charleston, Mo. at present residing in Wash. D.C. Congress Hall Hotel. Nat. D.A.R. number (123241) admitted to the Nat. Society April 15th, 1916 (wife of Congressman Joseph J. Russell.)
The application is signed by Mrs. Henry Churchill Cook, Regent Independence Bell Chapter, D.A.R. Washington, D.C. 1925 Calvert St., N.W. who added a note that Mrs. Addie Grote Little was married twice - once to William Little (Sept. 5, 1887) and to W.H. Brown (June 5, 1887)
