    Description

Blanche Stuart Scott [1884 1970] also known as Betty Scott is believed to be by most aviation historians the first American woman to ever fly a plane in the United States. Scott was born in Rochester, New York and was a early automobile enthusiast who drove a car at the age of 15. In 1910 Scott became the second woman after Alice Huyler Ramsey to drive a automobile across the United States which began on May 16, 1910 and ended on July 23, 1910. The publicity surrounding her automobile journey brought her to the attention of Glenn Curtiss who agreed to provide Scott flying lessons which she received directly from Curtiss. On September 6, 1910 while practicing taxiing on her own, either by intention or the moving during taxiing and a gust of wind, her biplane lifted and reached an altitude of forty feet and returned to the ground under her control. Scott's flight was short and possibly unintentional but Scott is credited by the Early Bird of Aviation Society as the first woman to pilot and solo an airplane in the United States. The controversy was caused by the Aeronautical Society of America who credited Bessie Raiche's flight on September 16, 1910 as the first flight. The controversy continued for decades and caused heated argument between Scott and Dr. Raiche. Listed for auction is the autograph of Blanche Stuart Scott signed on a card. The autograph is signed ''Sincerely Blanche Stuart Scott E.B - Sept 6. 1920'' in black felt pen. The card measures 5.00 x 3.00 inches and is in fine condition and will be accompanied with its original transmittal envelope postmarked 1953. The autograph is authentic, signed with the date of her historical flight and is a desirable example of the first woman to fly an airplane in the United States. We have listed a collection of military, aviation and astronaut autographs.
