    Description

    Cecil A. Allen [1904 1935] was a pioneering racing aviator of the early 1930's. In 1935, he entered the Bendix Race which was part of the National Air Races, flying a Granville Brothers Gee Bee R-1/2 hybrid called the ''Spirit of Right''. Allen conducted alteration to the plane against the consuel of the Granville Brothers which included a larger fuel tank that was positioned well aft of the center of gravity. On the morning of August 30, 1935, Allen took off from Van Nuys Airport and witnesses reported seeing the airplanes elevators in a full deflection and the airplane behaving unstable just before the plane crashed into a field. Cecil A. Allen was 31 years old at the time of his death. Listed for auction is a commemorative Air Mail cover signed by Cecil A. Allen. The cover commemorates the 1932 Transcontinental Derby and the autograph is signed ''Cecil A. Allen'' in black fountain pen. The cover is postmarked Bartlesville, Okla Aug 25, 1932, and is affixed with two U.S postage stamps. The cover measures 6.50 x 3.50 inches, it has trivial toning/edge wear otherwise it is in very good condition. The autograph is authentic, rare to obtain and will be a desirable addition to any early aviation racing collection. We have listed a nice collection of astronaut, military and aviation autographs.
