    Early Lindbergh Bronze medal struck to commemorate Lindbergh's flight from New York to Paris in May, 1927.
    Obverse:
    Sketch of Lindbergh monoplane flying over a globe representation of his route. A cherub's mouth blows a favoring wind. Under the plane are the words "PER ASPERA AD ASTRA" (By hope to the stars).
    Reverse:
    Army wings over the words "COMMEMORATING FIRST NON-STOP NEW YORK TO PARIS FLIGHT BY
    COL

    Octagonal:
    3 ½ x 2½" chamfered " from the four sides, and weighs 7.9 ounces/223 grams.
    A sculptor*, medalist*, and teacher, John Clements Gregory came to the U.S. at age 14 and spent most of his life in New York City.
    Of him it was written that he "transformed classical themes into a modernist aesthetic." (Falk)
    As an educator, he was a professor of art at Columbia University from 1916-25, and Chair of the Sculpture Department of the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design from 1921-23.
