    Description

Matilde Josephine Moisant [1878 1964] was an American aviation pioneer who was the second woman in the United States to obtain a pilot's license. Moisant learned to fly at Alfred's Moisant Aviation School on Long Island, New York and was issued her pilots  certificate #44 on August 14, 1911, just a few weeks after her friend Harriet Quimby became the first woman awarded a pilots certificate. Moisant pursued a career in exhibition flying and broke many records including the women's altitude world record and won the Rodman-Wanamaker trophy. On April 14, 1912, she was involved in a serious plane crash, Moisant recovered from her injuries but never flew again. Listed for auction is the rare autograph of Matilde Josephine Moisant signed on a card. The autograph is addressed to a young collector and reads as follows, '' I am very happy to sign this card for you and thanks for thinking, I am such a great person - I'm really not. Matilde Moisant Pil. Lic #44'' in black fountain pen. The card measures 5.00 x 3.00 inches and is in fine condition and will be accompanied with its original transmittal envelope. The envelope is postmarked July 30, 1937, and is signed and addressed by her in the top left corner. The autograph is authentic, rare to obtain and is a desirable example of this noted aviation pioneer. We have listed a nice collection of military, aviation and astronaut autographs.
